Albert Einstein is reported to have asked his fellow physicist and friend Niels Bohr, one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics, whether he realistically believed that ‘the moon does not exist if nobody is looking at it.’ To this Bohr replied that however hard he (Einstein) may try, he would not be able to prove that it does, thus giving the entire riddle the status of a kind of an infallible conjecture—one that cannot be either proved or disproved.

That answer would come to final decision when Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon…or did he? Just kidding, I am no conspiracy theorist :). Back to the seriousness. Einstein couldn’t prove the moon’s existence so he considered it a fallacy.

We are also familiar with this famous quote, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Well, does it? Of course it does, it just isn’t heard by anyone.

You may be asking yourself how this all fits into sales. Well, consider this. Do you have statistics to prove that every one of your emails, blogs, and social media posts is reaching its intended audience? A yes answer is an inaccurate one. Open rates, click throughs, and even comments on posts are often misrepresented. I can explain all of that in more detail if you want. Just email or call me.

Often times, people are listening and/or reading when you don’t even know about it. They are behind the scenes, just observing. How do I know this? In the last two weeks, I have received emails from two different business colleagues in which they shared that they are reading everything I post. They utilize my insight to increase the effectiveness of their sales efforts. They share my content with others on their teams. This is great for a few reasons.

  1. I am providing value to their sale efforts. That is the ultimate goal of my business, and if I can do that through blogs and posts, I am beyond stoked.
  2. They are sharing my content. That means that other people I am not connected to are becoming connected to me.
  3. Blogs and social media only go so far. Eventually, they will hit a spot when this content alone will not do. And who will they hire? I put myself at the top of the running.

So do not believe the lying statistics. People are listening when you don’t even know it (and the moon is real). Keep building great content. Pay attention to every comment, like, and share and be ready to take that connection to the next level!
